Buoyed on Boyd

ARTHUR BOYD gifted his Nowra, NSW home and the extensive land around it that inspired many of his paintings, to the people of Australia because he believed you can’t own a landscape.

You can’t own a view either and, while this modest three-bedroom home on Boyd Crescent, Hamilton Hill may not have sweeping vistas, it’s a gift to wake up to see Rottnest and Garden Island floating on the horizon.

Or simply to step out onto the balcony of the spacious main bedroom and breathe in the refreshing ocean air.

The group of townhouses, just behind a row of shops and a tavern/bottle shop off Cockburn Road, is a friendly sort of complex and neighbours get together every couple of months to keep the communal gardens looking their best.

Which saves a motza on strata fees, which are some of the lowest around, according to the agent.

And with a swag of solar panels, the vendor receives cheques rather than bills from the energy overlords.

The entry hall of this abode is larger than life, with a glorious and modern chandelier and a soaring, arched window stretching from the ground floor to the upper level.

The ground floor is given over to living spaces, with an open-plan living/dining area and an generous sized kitchen, with a large pantry and plenty of storage and bench space.

Floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors off the living area lead to a walled courtyard garden which, because this is a corner unit, is much bigger than most.

The basics are here for a pleasant garden, including a couple of decent sized trees, and a fabric-covered pergola, but as the vendor admits, he’s no gardener and the cactus and other succulents are making it on their own.

“I’m bad at watering and fertilising: anything that couldn’t survive has died,” he says, abashed. All three bedrooms are upstairs, including the main with its walk-in-robe, and I loved the blue-and-white fish and turtle tile dado in the ensuite.

A pull-down ladder leads to a heap of storage in the ceiling.

South Beach, with its choice of cafes, is a five-minute walk away, and there’s no shortage of shops close by.
