Cells for backpackers

Fremantle Prison #43 oct 04

FREMANTLE’S world heritage-listed prison will be home to a backpackers’ hostel come April 1. It’s taken Youth Hostels Australia five years to break into the prison’s old female division, with its first plan to plonk three containers outside the block sent to solitary by Freo council’s planning committee. Last year YHA came back with a proposal to re-use rooms and knock down a jewellery workshop to make way for a new single-storey building, giving the organisation 172 beds.
