Family’s $500 rent plight

COCKBURN city council has put forward a new plan it says makes the Perth Freight Link redundant.

At the council’s monthly meeting on Thursday evening, mayor Logan Howlett put forward a motion asking the state government to speed up construction of an intermodal facility in Latitude 32.

The facility would focus on sending containers to Fremantle port using the existing railway lines, but would also be ready for a second harbour, due to be constructed in 15 to 20 years.

Mr Howlett says it would use existing east-west roads which would require little in the way of uprades. As a result, the mayor’s motion seeks the removal of Roe 8 from the metropolitan planning scheme.

He says the existing link route doesn’t consider the volume of containers heading in and out of Fremantle port which come from the south metro region.

Cr Steve Portelli was the only voice of dissent.
