Labor slams station delay

THE state Labor opposition is slamming a slightly delayed rollout of the Aubin Grove railway station as a “broken promise”.

The Barnett government had promised to deliver the station by late 2016 but its completion date has been pushed back a few months to early 2017.

Labor leader Mark McGowan and Cockburn MP Fran Logan say they won’t hold their breath the $57 million project will be finished by the new date, either, with budget papers revealing $10m earmarked to be spent in 2017/18—after the supposed completion date. “They’re just sucking people in,” Mr Logan says.

A staffer for WA transport minister Dean Nalder says nothing should be read into the funds allocation.

“It is quite common for funds to be allocated in the budget cycle after the completion of a project,” spokesman Robert Broun emailed.

When completed the station, with 2000 bays, will be the largest park ’n’ ride station on the Transperth network.

Mr McGowan says Labor is aiming to win Jandakot from cabinet minister Joe Francis. It is one of 10 seats the party needs to win to form government.

Mr Francis was on a sickie when the Herald called but was well enough to tell the ABC that Labor needs “to go and learn how to read Budget papers”.
