Twists and turns

THERE are as many twists, turns and surprises at this Belarius Street home as there are in a Shakespeare play.

Many of Coolbellup’s streets are named after the bard’s characters and Belarius is a key player in Cymbeline.

The vendor is a mosaic artist and this amazing two-bedroom/two-bathroom abode is full of his work and that of his artist mates.

The kitchen has a beautiful slump-glass splash-back made by the vendor and a friend and its red walls are based on a Turkish bathhouse.

One wall in the huge open plan living/dining area was painted by another artist friend, Frances Forgan.

After 12 years weaving his special touches to the 728sqm property, the vendor is heading off for new adventures in Cambodia, and hoping for a like-minded “guardian” to take over.

It’s been a labour of love, for home and garden, including the many fruit trees rescued from homes demolished in Wattleup, and an amazing tree-of-life mosaic on an outer wall.

A brightly coloured mosaic pathway wends its way through lush garden beds to a delightful open-air bathroom, and a massive brick studio.

Previously home to a sculptor, his gargantuan old-fashioned steel kiln is now a funky front gate, and one of the studio doors came from the Norfolk Hotel—complete with the imprint of an axe, said to have been wielded by an unhappy patron.

“I refuse to fix it,” the vendor says with a grin.

A covered alfresco area fronts this phantasmagorical home, a wide expanse under a soaring cathedral roof, a pizza oven to one side. A timber deck between the house and thickly planted garden ensures alfresco entertaining on a larger-than-life scale.

The massive jarrah table, on wheels, and the benches are staying, as are a number of fittings.

There’s still plenty of work to do here, including carrying out plans to create two more bedrooms between the home and studio.
Although I found myself fantasising about the mother of all bedrooms in the space, with a bank of glass and steel doors to the gorgeous garden.

Close to shops, and the Waldorf school and a short drive to Perth, this is a rare find, so what are you waiting for?
