STARTED by the wives of SAS soldiers at Campbell Barracks in 1974, Army Art has been raising money for charitable groups for more than 40 years.

Started as a one-off fundraiser for the ladies’ auxiliary, which helps families of soldiers, it now donates proceeds from its annual art exhibition to a range of WA groups, to date raising almost $800,000.

This year SoldierOn and Angel Hands, which help those affected by homicide and personal violence, will get the lion’s share.

“[It] deals with similar issues around significant traumatic events [to soldiers],” Leza Howie says.

Artworks from 120 WA artists will be on show in an exhibition aimed at promoting established and emerging artists. For the centenary of Gallipoli, this year incorporates the theme For My Country. It’s on at Leeuwin Barracks, East Fremantle, August 7–9, entry by gold coin donation.
