Soup for you

DAVID KANE serves fast food, with a twist—and sometimes a splash of tawny port.

Clear any mental images of greasy, fried chips and battered meat because we’re talking about healthy fast food (surely that’s an oxymoron, right?).

The East Freo man cooks and serves wholesome soups made from fresh local ingredients at the Subi Farmers Market and Beaconsfield’s Growers’ Green Farmers’ Market.

On the menu when the Herald visited recently was coconut cream and pumpkin, potato and leek and a sold-out slow-cooked beef goulash spliced with port—all came with a slice of a pane di casa loaf, or if you’re keen, a bread bowl ($13). Small servings are $8, large $10. Smiles are free.

The pumpkin—the vegan option—is smooth and the coconut adds creamy sweetness. It’s a real heart-warmer for a cool spring day.

Asked what he’ll do when soup weather wanes like the crowds at Subi when footy dies for another year, Kane says he has some cold soup ideas brewing in his head.

He refrained from revealing too much, but gave the Herald a sneak peek: think gazpacho, the Spanish tomato-based cold soup, but with more colour and a modern edge.

Kane started his “gourmet soup bar” business—Suppa Club, from the Latin for soup—in June after noticing a lack of quick healthy bites around town.

“I’ve recently become sick of the lack of good, healthy, wholesome food available in our cities these days,” Kane says.

“If it’s not a full-blown meal, sandwich or burger, we are extremely limited to what is on offer in a fast food sense.”

He’s a slashie—a business development manager slash cook. While away from the keyboard (afk, as the youngsters say) at Fremantle’s The Freedom Foundry creative agency, he spends Friday nights cooking and the weekends serving.

Kane says he hasn’t minded working seven days because he’s following a passion. Anything unsold is handed over to St Patrick’s Community Support Centre—now, that’s really suppa.
