Open your mind

ARTWORKS created by people who’ve experienced mental illness go on display at the Alma Street centre from October 5.

Run with the Disabled in the Arts, Disadvantage in the Arts group, the yearly Open Minds Open Doors exhibition aims to give people a bit of insight into personal experiences through the artwork. Anne Oliver has been organising the event for 10 years and says art lets people express themselves in ways they might not be able to in their everyday life, and working on a piece can also give them a goal to work towards.

“The event is good for the community,” she says. “By talking about this exhibition we are raising awareness of mental health and this helps to reduce stigma surrounding mental health issues.” Public viewing times are at the Alma Street Centre (W Block, Fremantle hospital) 10am to 4pm on weekdays.
