Little Cafe is big on taste

A LAZY Saturday, the sun shining and the D’Angers’ tummies are rumbling so it was time to check out a new cafe I’d driven past a few times on Hampton Road.

That Little Cafe has big shoes to fill, having taken over the old Peds Thai, which in its hey-day had locals queuing out the door.

Owners Courtney Sheridan and Rob Collica seem to be onto a good thing, with a menu well placed to suit the Freo crowd.

We met Rob some years ago when he was running Cosa Nostra in Spearwood, and TLC is a very different affair from that sprawling restaurant, with packing-crate furniture setting the tone in the funky little eatery.

But don’t be deceived, it’s bigger than it seems from Hampton Road, thanks to a lovely alfresco area at the rear, with its brightly cartoon-like mural and potted plants.

Armed with a couple of freshly squeezed juices ($6.50) we kicked back to enjoy the pleasant ambience at our leisure.

Nasi goreng ($17.50) is on the breakfast menu but Rob and co were happy to whip D’Angerous Dave up a serve, minus the chicken, for lunch.

With just the right amount of Indonesian spiciness, and topped by a perfectly cooked egg, it went down a treat.

I can say without fear of contradiction TLC’s vegie burger ($16.50) is one of the best I’ve ever eaten, moist and spicy and bursting with flavour.

We shared a bowl of chips, which chip-aholic Dave gave an eight out of 10, because he never gives anything higher, believing there should always be room for something even better elsewhere, but given how good these were, he’s got a better chance of winning Lotto.

A coffee pot of earl grey tea was just the shot with a couple of slices of toasted banana bread and a coconut bread.

A nice little addition to Freo.
