Art of glass

GORGEOUS stained glass features in this turn-of-the-century Beaconsfield home — which is hardly surprising given the vendor is a stained glass artist.

Her love of nature quite literally shines through, with colourful parrots cavorting around the front door, cute wrens in the bathroom and in a living room door, and dolphins over a bedroom window.

Glass of the non-stained sort features hugely in the soaring open-plan extension, with a massive see-through wall reaching up to the beamed, cathedral ceiling and framing a lush garden.

Evidence of a much-loved family home are everywhere, none more so than one of the bedrooms, where a mezzanine bed is suspended on a single bush pole.

Accessed by a broad timber steps it’s been used by the vendor’s three sons over the years, either as a bed, or a very cool sitting area when friends drop by.

Having known the family for a few years I can vouch for many a sleep-over, at a home that exudes relaxed ambience.

Ceiling roses, rich jarrah floors, high ceilings and deep skirting abound in the original section of the home.

Aged jarrah meets textured slate in the extension where a galley-style kitchen is flooded with light thanks to a huge window and an even bigger skylight.

The lush garden is dominated by a massive ficus, its gnarled roots a focal point and its towering foliage creating shade, and a home for birds.

No wonder kids love this place, the pool has a railway sleeper “jetty” to dive from, and when they were old enough each moved into the studio apartment, with its own kitchen, a short stumble away.

And what went on in the sauna in the bathroom is probably not something mum ever wants to learn.

Sitting on 534sqm, the generous front garden is tucked behind a sheltering limestone-rendered wall and high white picket gates.

There’s room here for mum, dad and the kids to park their cars.

This Fifth Avenue home is walking distance to schools, shops and cafes. Or jump on a bus on South Street and you’re in Fremantle, or at South Beach in next to no time.
