BACKLIGHT body art and circus meld in neon-lit stories, and comedian Arj Baker’s Keeper or Crapper will sort out routines to be worked up and those to flush, as the second annual Freo Royale kicks off January 28–February 7.
They’re just a couple of a stellar line-up heading to Fremantle for the port city’s collaboration with Fringe World.
“We don’t want to be seen as a cousin to the city and some acts are exclusive,” organiser Ronan Freeburn says.
Luminous, neon-coloured circus performers, has been likened to being dropped into a Salvador Dali painting, and will perform only at the Freo town hall.
As will Tubular Bells for Two, a comedic and provocative reworking of Mike Oldfield’s classic, the performers taking out two awards at the Edinburgh Fringe.
Paul McDermott will host a gala show featuring a smorgasbord of acts — and he’s bringing the Doug Anthony Allstars. Burlesque, comedy and circus are all part of the mix, including Arr We There Yet, a side splitting show for the kids, from a trio of graduates from the National Institute of Circus Arts.
And Kings Square will come alive with pop-up bars and food outlets for punters to keep up their strength between shows at a variety of venues across the city.
