Street Arts line-up announced

FREMANTLE council has announced the line-up for the 2016 Street Arts Festival.

On the bill for the $468,000 festival are French company Defracto’s Flaque, a mix of “juggling, slackness, puddles and a procession for the last hours of Cleopatra”.

Organiser Alex Marshall is proud of having signed up Tuareg band Ezza, which has been making a big impression on the world festival circuit.

He says one of the members was involved in a previous street arts with a different group, but lost his passport. Mr Marshall and others went above and beyond to get him on a flight, and he literally flew across the world, jumped into a taxi and straight into a gig with Ezza. Mr Marshall says the band was so impressed by Freo’s efforts it happily signed up for an Aussie gig.

An odd-looking inclusion is The Wheel House by Acrojou, a UK company that does indeed have a tiny house in a wheel where the performers perform theatrical acrobatics.

Pogo Fred is a multiple Guinness world record holder for pogo tricks — including the highest-ever jump.

There’s also giant human body parts from Snuff Puppets, Dutch hoola hoop specialist Lisa Lottie, strong lady Charmaine and her prop Reuben, marionettes from Italian company Di Filippo Marionette and plenty more.

Mr Marshall says the festival continues to grow, and this year visitor numbers and its contribution to the economy will be measured. In 2012 it was estimated it contributed $2.5 million to local tills.

He says this year South Terrace will be closed to traffic the entire weekend, allowing cafes and restaurants to spill onto the street. He says the council will support liquor applications, and waive the usual fee for alfresco dining to help support the long weekend.
