NO, it’s not a soviet-era dictator, it’s a bloody big sign at the new Dan Murphy’s liquor barn in Bicton.

The sign is so big that Murphy’s lamb-chop sideburns loom over the tree tops on Canning Highway and it’s visible from the Stock Road intersection.

Local resident Jackie Curtis, who lives on Kanimbla Street, says it’s just awful.

“I got a shock when I saw the size of it,” she says.

“It’s so over the top in relation to the logo and the building that it looks ridiculous.

“It’s so large, trucks can drive through the archway underneath it.”

Melville council CEO Shayne Silcox says the sign was approved in November, 2012.

“The size of the structure appears to be consistent with the approved drawings,” he says.

When we asked mayor Russell Aubrey for his personal opinion this is what we got back: “The rationale behind the content and design of commercial signage is a business decision for this and every applicant and not the city.”

The Herald understands the Bicton store is one of the largest DM’s in Australia. The chain is owned by Woolworths.
