Mayor losing patience with slow NBN rollout

NBN construction in Cockburn is scheduled to start in the second half of the year, but Cockburn city council wants more detail on the rollout.

So far, no suburbs in the city—aside from new developments—have the NBN and mayor Logan Howlett’s patience is wearing thin.

“I’m extremely disappointed with the slow progress of the roll out of NBN with no further progress being made in the past three years,” he says.

“This is of ongoing concern to our community and needs to be addressed as a priority.”

The city met with NBN representatives on February 9 and are awaiting “a more robust set of information and timetables from NBN so that residents and business owners have a clearer picture of the rollout”.

WA corporate affairs manager Philipa Perry says more than 3000 premises in new developments across Cockburn have the NBN, including North Coogee, Atwell, Cockburn Central, Success and Aubin Grove.

“In addition, NBN has completed the construction of a number of fibre transit networks in the city of Cockburn, which form the backbone of the nbn network across Australia,” she says.

“The NBN has developed a sequence for the rollout in every area of Australia that takes into account practical, financial and engineering criteria, as well as whether an area is deemed under-served.”

  1. That’s not a fair statement ‘WA corporate affairs manager Philipa Perry says more than 3000 premises in new developments across Cockburn have the NBN, including North Coogee, Atwell, Cockburn Central, Success and Aubin Grove.’
For those of us in the South Beach Estate (North Coogee) we have terrible internet options — Naked is not available to us due to the technology (read cost cutting) chosen.
Seems to be a fairly common experience in this estate — cost cutting and money grabbing at every opportunity. The council has done it’s best to rort the rate payers, and done their up most best to destroy the feel of the estate (read crap apartments, lack of parking etc). I’d love an article on just what went wrong with this estate!

  2. Thanks Jonathon, we have done a few articles along the way, regarding residents’ concerns about particular apartment developments being “worse than Homeswest”, the traffic problems – all the way back to the GFC when we reported on developers trying to squeeze in more as their bottom lines took a hit. But perhaps a nice (perhaps not the right word) overview of the estate is in order. We’ll be in contact.

  3. Sounds good. The majority of the residents are thoroughly disappointed with what has happened. From a personal standpoint, we bought into the estate due to aspirational reasons — we didn’t think we would get such a good opportunity to move up into a quality estate so close to Fremantle and the beach. Unfortunately the council and developers had other plans, I’ve heard the term ‘North Coogee ghetto’ has been used by some in Cockburn council.
The apartments through out the estate are a concern — the expensive apartments are fine, they have been designed to ensure there is adequate parking and facilities. The ones developed by Match in the City of Cockburn are cheap and nasty. A particular bug bear for those of us on Shoalwater St, is that the apartments presently going up were initially reserved for townhouses — The Stockland sales office had a 3d estate model on display, of which 2 story townhouses were clearly depicted. What we have now is a 4 story apartment block full of 1 and 2 bedroom apartments, with minimal parking supplied for the residents. The residents on Shoalwater St were never contacted or informed by the council until it was too late for us to do anything about it. What is particularly jarring is we designed a house that would take in a lovely view of the sky, 3-4 storys tend to block that.

I love to take my kids to one of the playgrounds over in the Fremantle section of the estate. The differences between the two are mind blowing, the Fremantle portion was designed for the residents, and not a blatant attempt at a cash grab.

I’m fairly confident that there has been some dodgy dealings going on with this estate, and it’s quite upsetting given the amount of money we had to pay to buy and build, and the hoops we had to jump through to ensure that our house met the stringent design guidelines.

  4. Recently moved to North Coogee from interstate. Great spot, close to the beach and to Fremantle to catch the train to the CBD for work. Everything is fantastic until….. We apply for the internet! I cannot get the NBN in a brand new home in a near new area (fair enough I thought). Applied for ADSL2+ which i used to have 4 years ago in a very rural area interstate and told we are unable to have this due to the incorrect technology being installed at the local exchange. Applied for ADSL 1 as a last resort and no luck here either. WE CANNOT even get DIAL UP!!! There are no free ports at the local exchange and they will not upgrade this due to potential NBN coming through in (no one can confirm when but NBN co say it might be within the next 12 months or more). I cannot get over the fact that we are unable to get the internet at all. We use our mobile data at present. I feel that we have gone back in time somewhat! Girls have to do their school home work via a hotspot and we cannot stream any TV. The large amount of apartments were never supposed to be here according to many of the existing locals i speak to and this is perhaps the reason there is no ports left at the exchange – too many others already connected. Terrible and given i need to use the internet for my work, i will need to consider moving or paying for excess data until the NBN comes past the house.

  5. Aubin Grove the Walk. No ports available. The only internet service that has been available since 2009 is Vivid Wireless When I first built the Jandakot exchange was so over loaded only adsl1 was available and trying to use voip was a joke. the internet was worse than dial-up. At the community group meeting a rep from Telstra was less than helpful and had no answers about any future upgrades or nbn or rely anything but lip service. Vivid wireless is constantly plagued with slow speeds and regular dropouts. Aubin Grove the Walk as far as internet service goes is an absolute disgrace. I have researched any alternative options and at this current time there are none that I am aware of. It would be of huge benefit if you ran an article looking at all the internet options available and in what areas and rate them from best to worst and map it out. Id be interested to see who has been looked after and who has missed out. any positive suggestions to a positive outcome are very welcome. NBN What’s That ? LOL
