Freo Legacy on the march

FREMANTLE LEGACY is between wars, so to speak.

Local legatee Steve Grady says the organisation, which looks after the families of Defence personnel who’ve been killed or injured, usually gets an influx of volunteers 20 years after their war service.

That puts Legacy somewhere between the Gulf and Afghanistan. But Mr Grady says despite the timing, it’s on a push to raise its profile and rebuild the strong roots it once had with the business community.

The former airforce radio operator says it’s trying to focus on Freo’s role as the main port for soldiers returning from WWI, as many would have found jobs in local businesses on return.

Fremantle Legacy’s got three major events this month.

On Wednesday April 20, Liberal state minister Joe Francis, a former sailor, will address an ANZAC Day breakfast at the Rydges Hotel in Fremantle. Tickets are $60.

On Friday April 22 volunteers will sell badges at most local shopping centres and the Fremantle train station (they cost between $2 and $50).

The money goes to help struggling families to pay bills or to help their kids along with their education. There’s also a holiday home for kids at Geographe Bay, which attracts many SAS soldiers happy to be a surrogate dad for a day and to help build kids’ self-esteem. Legacy will then march in Fremantle’s ANZAC Day parade.
