Home of happy memories

THE vendors of this art deco delight in May Street, East Fremantle raised their children here and it’s been in the same hands for 35 years.

“And only ever had three owners, according to the title,” the agent says.

The two-bedroomer oozes charm, from its sloping lawn and the gracious stairs to the elevated front verandah to the gorgeous garden at the rear.

The street-facing lounge room has the most amazing decorative ceiling you’ll see, a magic carpet of proteas, with a protea leaf patterning on the cornices.

The vendor was a stained-glass artist and some lead-light doors were replaced with beautiful coloured glass some years back.

But there’s no shortage of original lead-light doors and windows, including a gorgeous set in the lounge that click back so they won’t slam.

Once (gently) closed and with the gas fire cranked up, this is a cosy space on the coldest night.

All door frames have their original art deco jarrah surrounds, and there are plate rails and picture rails, and rich chocolatey jarrah floors.

The spacious kitchen is neat and tidy, and new owners could live with it happily, but will probably want to give it a makeover to bring it into the 21st century: the bones are there for a gorgeous space, with super-high ceilings, beautiful jarrah floors and a cute hatch to the lounge.

An addition to the northern side some years back created three spacious rooms, making it just right for conversion to a main bedroom suite, with a generous dressing room and ensuite.

A long, long garage is also a good starting place for a “wing” of bedrooms, which could be joined to the home via a glass walkway.

How delightful to wake up looking out onto the garden, which is a sweet area of soaring trees and terraced lawn and gardens.

This lovely home is a short walk from the vibrant George Street strip, and close to both Richmond primary school and John Curtin College of the Arts (you’d have to check whether your kids could go, though).

The river is close by and it’s just a 30-minute walk to the port city.
