HUBBY’S enthusiasm went from nought to 100 in under 60 seconds when he test drove this BMW (Bavarian Mansion WA) on Adrian Street, Palmyra, his wife says.
“The house ticked all the boxes for me, but my husband said no way…then he looked at it.”
Her then eight-year-old daughter was so taken with her new home she would hang out of the upper windows declaring she was a princess in a castle.

With an upper level wing to herself you can see why. This is pure fairy story stuff with golden timber ceilings, walls and floors, huge carved beams, and cute under eave areas to play, including one so hidden the vendor had to climb the timber spiral stairs to show me the door set into the panelling.
Okay, so really it’s a huge storage area, but it certainly makes a great cubby for kids.

A forest of trees went into creating this four-bedroom/three-bathroom home: all of it farmed timber from an area near Germany’s famed Black Forest, we should add.
The original owner, a German builder, engaged master craftsmen from back home to create his fanciful abode, including ornate, carved struts and huge beams, to be shipped to the colonies and reassembled.
The result is an expansive home that fires the imagination from the minute you step into the entry vestibule: “It’s futuristic, not cookie cutter,” the vendor says.

Gorgeously dressed timber lines walls and ceiling in the dining area.
Through a wide arched doorway, the massive open living/kitchen glows a toffee gold under its soaring timber ceiling.
The walls are snowy white, stuccoed to soften noise bouncing off hard walls and the terracotta tiled floor.
The untreated Austrian pine timber found throughout the home absorbs odour, and with stereotypical German efficiency there’s double glazing, and underfloor heating in the living areas.

A huge picture window in the spacious kitchen overlooks the pool and there’s a servery hatch onto a sweeping, covered alfresco area. Entertaining is easy with a swathe of granite bench tops, a six-burner stove–and a butler’s pantry that my kitchen would fit into three times over: “It’s what I’ll miss the most,” the vendor sighs.
The main bedroom has doors to the pool, and a massive ensuite with spa and bidet.
This is a multi-generational home and there’s a generous, two-bedroomed granny flat, with its own entry and pool access. Palmyra primary is walking distance, and there’s no shortage of shops and cafes a short drive away.
