A pile of problems

A HUGE pile of rubbish which has sat outside a Homeswest unit in North Fremantle for months has neighbours fuming.

The junk, in Harvest Road, includes old tellies, a mouldy couch and a broken bicycle and has been there since Christmas when the neighbours last caught sight of the tenants.

Nearby resident Sandy Rogers said when she contacted Homeswest, she was told the tenants had 60 days notice to collect their belongings.

She called back in February, and was assured “it’ll be cleaned up soon,” but months later the pile is still there — now with vines growing through it.

• This pile of junk has plants growing through it from sitting there so long.

Young kids in the area have been warned against playing with the discarded bits and pieces, which were strewn around by the storm a fortnight ago.

“I’ve got guests coming tomorrow and they’ve got to walk past this,” Ms Rogers says.

“It’s embarrassing. An instant stereotype of social housing.”

“It’s a shame because everyone else takes pride in their house and their garden.”

Housing says the unit is technically not vacant because the tenant is still paying rent, and they’d made commitments to dispose of the pile. In order for the department to clear it up, the tenancy would first need to be terminated by a court order.

A hearing is scheduled for later this month.

  1. There is nothing unusual about that in Fremantle. It never fails to amaze me that people do this and there doesn’t seem to be any council bye law to prevent it.
