For the love of animals
Do what you love and never work a day in your life. Sounds cheesy right? Not for Michelle, owner and Manager of Select Pets Bicton for the past 5 years. After coming to the realisation that climbing the corporate ladder was not for her she burnt her suits and never looked back.
“I have always had a passion for all animals, domestic and wild since I could make my first animal noise” says Michelle. “From my late teens onwards, I have been involved in volunteering for all types of animal related projects from wildlife to pet rescue”. So it was no surprise when Michelle took over this established business in 2009 that she would want to align herself with a Perth rescue group. “We are very proud to be only one of a handful of pet stores that hold Cat Haven kittens and cats”.
“The way we do business is a little different. We endeavour to lead the way towards change within the industry” Some of the ways Select Pets Bicton is leading the way for reform include carrying only locally bred puppies, educating prospective new families on the responsibilities of pet ownership and supporting the Cat Haven by being an external adoption agency.
She has met so many amazing pet loving people over the past five years through the store and some of the stories are so heartwarming. “I always knew how special animals were to people, but some of the stories on how their pets have assisted through some fairly low times is touching” say Michelle. She tells us of a time a middle aged lady came into the store a few weeks after her husband of many years passed away suddenly. The couple had just retired. and were fulfilling their dream of travelling around Australia in a caravan. They were only half way through their journey when her husband passed away but she knew she had to continue. The lady was considering adopting a new puppy when she returned back home. She heard about Select Pets from a friend who was a regular and decided upon meeting a sweet little Jack Russell in store that he would become her new travelling buddy.
It is stories like this that make owning and managing Select Pets not just a sea change in a career or just a job, it is “loving what you do each and every day” says Michelle.
