PUT it down and stand back,” a man at the next table exclaimed in awe as a plate the size of wheel hub, brimming with seafood and chips, thudded onto his table.
I assumed it was a share plate, but two more massive plates appeared in front of the trio. Somehow they managed to eat the lot.

Lunch Specials
Joe’s Fish Shack has been going for a while, but somehow the D’Angers hadn’t got around to visiting – until spotting the weekday lunch specials in the Chook.
Like hungry seagulls we swooped on a just-vacated table for a front-row seat to the moving feast that is Fishing Boat Harbour.
It came with a bit of cabaret as a couple of landlubbers tried and failed repeatedly to tie up a large power boat with knots so inept it would make your granny blush.
With bogan-like class we shared a plate of chips ($6.50) and garlic bread ($5.95) as an entree.
And were a bit sorry, not because they weren’t up to scratch, but because both were large serves and so good we just couldn’t leave any.

Perfectly Cooked
Torn between the New Orleans seafood and the oriental chilli fish ($17.95) the spiciness of chilli and a tomato sauce on a cold day won me over in the mains stakes.
A very generous serve, the diced and battered fish was perfectly cooked, firm but moist and tossed in a soya, chilli and tomato sauce.
It arrived sitting atop a delicious pile of Spanish rice. What a combination.
Best Ever
It’s nice to know after 30 years of marriage D’Angerous Dave can still surprise, which he did by uncharacteristically not ordering fish and chips, but a salad – a caesar salad, with salmon.
“It’s the best I’ve ever eaten,” he exclaimed, also uncharacteristically, as he imagines he’s required to criticise at food reviews.
The salad was crisp and fresh with a particularly delicious sauce and the salmon was perfectly cooked, not too well done but not under either.
But he forgot to say hold the bacon, so had to pick out the plentitude of crisp piggy pieces.
