There once was a house…

A BABY grand piano was the last thing I’d expected to see at this modest home tucked down Limerick Way, between Montreal and Onslow Street in Fremantle East.

But there it was, barely denting the spacious lounge as I stepped through the Japanese-looking glass and timber doors.

There was nobody around so I had a little tinkle – until the agent appeared and my Walter Mitty dream as a concert pianist crashed like my discordant noise.

Built in 2002 this Dale Alcock three-bedroom home, on 340sqm, is a surprise package, with slate floors, a plentitude of large windows, floor-to-ceiling doors and a very generous open-plan.

I’d initially been put off by the faux limestone exterior, but coupled with cottage-like bay windows and shutters, and the moss-covered natural limestone rock of the raised garden beds — not to mention plenty of greenery — I was soon won over.

The main bedroom overlooks a very pleasant north-facing courtyard, which is sheltered by high walls to the side and a bank of green onto the laneway.

With a walk-in-robe and ensuite the bedroom is a cosy space for parents to chill away from le enfant terribles.

Not that they’d want to hang out with the grown ups when one of the bedrooms has playful green walls covered in story-book jungle animals.

The bedrooms run parallel to the spacious living/dining/kitchen, where huge windows ensure plenty of light.

The kitchen is perhaps a bit jaded, with cream cupboards and brown flecked formica tops, but it’s a generous space, with a big pantry, and could easily be lifted to new heights, at little cost.

Floor-to-ceiling glass off the dining area leads out to a covered alfresco area, a private oasis with mossy, raised garden beds full of ferns.

This is an easy care abode, for a small family or those looking for a lock and leave.

The vibrant George Street cafe strip is a few minutes walk away, as are the East Fremantle primary school and John Curtin College of the Arts.

And of course Fremantle is virtually on the doorstep.
