FREMANTLE council adopted a $90.98m budget last week, including $18.7m for capital works and a rate increase of 3 per cent.

Mayor Brad Pettitt described the budget as well-rounded and responsible, with a particular focus on heritage buildings.

Some of old buildings up for maintenance or refurbishment are the town hall, the Fremantle Boys’ School, the Naval Stores building, and the Fremantle Arts Centre.

Cantonment Hill will get $2.1m for paths, lighting and landscaping as part of Fremantle’s plan to turn it into a vibrant community space.

Over $600,000 will be spent on sustainability projects, including tree planting to increase canopy cover, One Planet projects, and community workshops on diverse housing.

There was also $3 million to be spent redeveloping 2 Jones Street, O’Connor as the new council depot. It’ll be paid by taking out a loan, but the council anticipates recouping that amount as the old depot is decommissioned and sold off for housing.
