COCKBURN mayor Logan Howlett wants his council to look into taking over the region’s Australia Day fireworks.
Fremantle council is considering scrapping the crackers because the $145,000 display is too expensive and culturally insensitive.
Cockburn contributes $25,000.
Mayor Howlett this week tabled a motion for Cockburn to look into taking over the display next year.
East Fremantle Mayor Jim O’Neill says he doesn’t want his council involved.
Perth lord mayor Lisa Scaffidi says the Skyworks in Perth are extremely popular.
”The city’s Australia Day celebrations are hugely popular and they have become an iconic and well-loved event in our community, with more than 235,000 people participating in the 2016 Skyworks,”she says.
”Of these people, 94 per cent recorded total satisfaction with the overall event, 95 per cent rated the entertainment positively and 88 per cent of the attendees planned to return in future.
”The city was proud to present a wide variety of events in the 2016 celebrations, including a free entertainment zone in Langley Park, a laser show on and above the Swan River, a Survival Perth concert and a striking fireworks finale.”
