Tuart Place Provides Support to Forgotten Australians: Open Day
The Australian Senate ‘Inquiry into Children in Institutional Care’ reveals that approximately 500,000 children and child migrants were placed in institutional or out-of-home care – a result of poverty and family breakdown at a time when there was limited support for families in crisis.
Until social change came about in Australia in the 1970s, there was almost no community or government support for families in crisis or financial need, so most children whose families could not care for them were placed in some form of out-of-home care. Institutions were managed by state governments, charities, welfare, religious organisations, or individuals, which were often under resourced and poorly supervised. Reports to the inquiry included ‘lack of love, affection and nurturing’, physical and sexual abuse, inadequate medical care, lack of healthy food and clothing and inadequate accommodation.

Tuart Place is a resource service for forgotten Australians, providing counselling and support services, assisting with family tracing and obtaining records, helping in lodging complaints and providing support in learning computer and life skills. The atmosphere and community at Tuart Place is something unique and very special. Those hesitant to come along, perhaps out of fear of revisiting past memories, or being pressured to talk, need not worry – Tuart Place has a community atmosphere that is warm, inviting, accepting, and equal. All who were in out-of-home care during childhood are cordially invited to gather at Tuart Place each Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. There are free community lunches on Mondays, where staff and guests share a meal together.
Tuart Place invites you to find out more at the Open Day this Monday 5th September from 11 am to 2 pm at 24 High Street Fremantle. There will be a free information session and screening of a short film. A complimentary sausage sizzle, cakes and refreshments will be available throughout the day.
