Culture cafe

A SERIES of cultural nights in a cute cafe out in Willagee are proving a raging success.

Sisters Melissa and Carly Simpson run the Little Olive Leaf cafe on Archibald Street and have so far organised six sold-out cultural nights.

Tonight (Saturday December 10) they’ll be running an indigenous culture night and have teamed up with local Aboriginal people to develop a menu to give people a flavour of Noongar cuisine.

Melissa says they’re not doing a fully traditional meal for fear the gamey meats might be a bit full on for some, but there’ll be a kangaroo stew and a tapas-style collection of dishes cooked with local herbs.

“We’re doing this one because Australia is very multicultural, but indigenous culture is very central to who we are and people don’t really know much about it. We didn’t really learn about it in school.”

She says the night will feature a welcome to country, smoking ceremony, and a 10-minute talk by cultural educator Dennis Simmons, who’ll also team up with John Fergus for some live music.

For bookings call the cafe on 0415 929 256.
