Back in Feb this year Freo’s beloved Zydecats  played at the Fly by Night Club for the Freo Workers’ Club and it was a great success. This weekend Sunday 14th May 2017, they are doing it again…

This venue is an absolute beauty – the old Victoria Hall in High St. – beautiful old building with a fabulous dance floor and great PA system and soundman.

This time it’s Mothers’ Day – so if you’ve got a Mother bring her along or if she can’t make it, come and celebrate (or commiserate). And to all mothers – come along yourselves and have some fun!

Zydecats was launched in 1992 by three well-known musicians previously in the critically acclaimed Dude Ranch. Lucky Oceans, world renowned steel guitarist and button accordionist approached Bill Rogers (vocals, sax and harmonica) about starting a band to play some Zydeco. With ex-Dude Ranch guitarist/vocalist & Rock and Roll encyclopedia Kent Hughes, this trio began to rehearse while they searched for repertoire and rhythm section.

From the start, the idea was to combine Zydeco with ‘Cat’ music – swing, jump blues and rockabilly, plus any other style that suited the line-up, including rock and roll, country blues, soul, R&B, Western Swing, Cajun and New Orleans R&B, plus a handful of Lucky’s and Kent’s own songs from the Dude Ranch song book.

“Unfortunately Lucky is away for this one – he’s in US until the end of the month,” says Bill Rogers. “But we are lucky enough to have Bob Patient presiding on piano and organ so expect plenty of good rockin and dance tunes aplenty.”

Thanks to the Fremantle Workers Club and the Fly you can catch the Zydecats on Sunday the 14th of May at Fly By Night Musicians Club for $10 entry or just $5 for members of the Workers Club or The Fly and you can dance the evening away in the stunning Victoria Hall.
