Gold standard

MOST Saturdays a friend and I walk from South Fremantle to the Esplanade Reserve for a coffee, and the most anticipated part of our stroll are the streets enchantingly named Gold, Coral and Silver.

This pocket of South Fremantle oozes character and charm all year round, and the 1905 limestone home at 1 Gold Street is no exception.

Baltic pine adds a soft yellow hue to the original section of this three-bedroom home, and there’s plenty of period features, including super high ceilings, fireplaces and deep skirting, sash windows and lovely decorative ceiling roses and architrave.

Bamboo conjures the same mellow yellow tones in the extension, where old melds beautifully with new, thanks to Fremantle architects Coda, which last month merged with Cox Architects, a well-heeled firm with branches overseas.

White steel struts support the stairs to the second level—giving the illusion of a floating staircase—floor-to-ceiling bifold doors ensure there’s a plentitude of light, and white plantation shutters keep this family space free from prying eyes.

A sweep of white Essastone tops the benches in the long, lean kitchen, and there’s no shortage of soft-close drawers, cupboards and a pull-out-pantry.

Smeg appliances gleam as if new, including a steam oven the owner says is great for cooking rice, and vegetables, particularly asparagus.

“You really get the taste coming through,” he says.

Shade sails soar across a timber deck to create a delightful alfresco area protected on three sides by tall jarrah screens and fencing.

With South Beach just down the road there’s a hot and cold shower to rinse off after a dip.

The main bedroom on the second level is a generous space with timber floors and a feature wall with flocked wallpaper, which changes colour depending on the light and angle.

Tucked in a corner is a compact study.

Sitting on a 197sqm lot there’s not a lot of garden, but there is a lovely little park almost on the doorstep.

South Freo’s dog park is a short walk away, and there’s plenty of shops, cafes and small bars nearby too.
