The new Fremantle

WHEN soaring property prices pushed Fremantle’s arty set out, many headed to Hamilton Hill and a lot found their way to Bakers Square.

Along Ommanney Street you’ll be surrounded by actors, artists and musicians, which could explain the often quirky homes, including this two-storey charmer clad in a mix of weatherboard and corrugated iron.

“It feels like this area of Hamilton Hill is the new Fremantle,” the owner says.

Despite it’s many spacious rooms there’s an air of a cottage down south to this three-bedroom abode. Lovely jarrah floors flow throughout, the ceilings are high and the blue walls of the kitchen add a dramatic touch to the generous open plan, with its cream walls.

Big timber framed windows frame a gorgeous garden with its mix of natives and exotics, with nooks and crannies to explore.

Corrugated iron has been used to good effect on the breakfast bar in the kitchen, where touches of yellow add a whimsical feel.

This generous space has a sweep of pine bench tops and heaps of drawers and cupboards, with attractive wire mesh doors and an attractive black and white federation style splash back.

There’s a choice of sitting areas, but when the sun shines I’d be heading outside to the brick alfresco area to enjoy the ambience and listen to the birdcalls.

One of the bedrooms has its own entry and ensuite making it ideal for adult kids who won’t leave home.

The main is a second storey eyrie, a generous space with walk-in-robe, ensuite and double doors to a balcony overlooking leafy gardens in every direction.

Should you want more the double garage doubles as a studio, with north facing french doors.

Having raised two kids here the owner reckons it’s a great family home: “Very spacious with a great sense of flow, and very flexible in terms of guests,” he says.

South Beach is a mere five minute drive away.
