A soaring success

I HOPE someone brings back the South Beach Kite Extravaganza.

It was a truly special day for South Fremantle, bringing thousands together for some dirt-cheap, hassle-free entertainment.

The extravaganza also brought out the best in the community, as so many individuals, churches, business, bands and organisations volunteered time, skills or resources to make it happen.

I organised a handful of them, and you always held your breath nervously until the Doctor came blowing in, then Michael Alvarez and Neil Taylor’s giant kites would soar skywards, the ultimate billboard drawing families from far and wide.

It was the perfect venue, so I was hardly surprised the extravaganza faded after being moved elsewhere.

If some generous souls did get it up and running again, the owners of this upmarket apartment in Enderby Close, North Coogee, would be among the biggest beneficiaries as it looks straight out to the iconic pines of South Beach.

They’re just a three-minute stroll away around the manicured lake of South Beach Estate, which means daily walks to watch the sun set over the sea would also be a possibility living here.

“I just put my sarong on and off I go,” says the owner.

It’s a ground-floor apartment meaning you can’t actually spot any blue water, but you’re close enough to smell it and hear the gentle lap of waves at night. It also means you get a good chunk of extra courtyard out the back, while those above have to make do with their tiddly balconies.

In fact, it almost feels like you’ve got an enormous backyard, because the courtyard seems to flow into the complex’s landscaped garden, while the lake and fountain acts as a moat to keep the riffraff out. It also leads to the communal pool area—for when the stingers are out and you don’t really feel beachy.

Inside, this two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment is well fitted out, including new oak floorboards.

The kitchen’s nice and generous in size and features a big Essa stone island bench, Meile appliances and lots of soft-close cupboards.

The bedrooms are also surprisingly spacious, the main also having a good-size ensuite.

It comes with two car bays and the complex has its own gymnasium, though for my mind the health benefits of an ion-pumping amble down the beach is something you can’t beat.
