THE new apartments at 19 Douro Road in South Fremantle have already won three prestigious industry awards since opening about six months ago.

The two-storey complex earned two Australian Institute of Architects WA gongs and a major building award from the Master Builders Association of WA.

When the former Liquorland site on the corner of Douro Road and Hulbert Street was first mooted for development, residents were worried it would be an ugly concrete and glass-box monolith.

But the end result is a low-rise two-storey development that pays homage to South Freo’s semi-industrial roots with the use of rusted iron, stone, unfinished concrete and raw brick.

Style wasn’t the only thing under consideration, and part of the brief was for a percentage of affordable housing, which saw many of the 20 warehouse-style apartments snapped up off-plan.

And it has an 8.8 star rating under the NatHERS Energy System, green walls, smart metres and solar panels.

Good design and cross flow means common spaces don’t need air-conditioning and the lights are automatic so there’s no wasted electricity.

All the apartments have air-con, but there’s also plenty of cross ventilation meaning the Freo doctor will keep things cool on all but the hottest of days.

There are only two two-bedroom units left for sale, each with balconies with views of South Beach, Carnac and Rottnest Islands and the port.

A sliding frosted-glass partition substitutes for the wall of the second bedroom.

Leave them open and you have extra living space, or close them to convert the space into a bedroom when visitors drop by.

The stylish black and white kitchen has Travertine benchtops, a pantry and a surfeit of drawers and cupboards.

And the crisp white bathroom has stylish black taps and fittings.

With a dentist, hairdresser and a wellness centre (with a physio and chiropractor) on the street level, living here has just about everything covered.

And South Beach is only a two minute walk away.
