What a difference 18 months and a new owner have made to Hubbles Yard in East Fremantle.
The last time I ventured into the George Street eatery I left hungry, not willing to face the greasy spoon menu and the pong of old cooking fat.
So it was with some trepidation D’Angerous Dave and I headed back recently.
Located on the corner of Hubble Street, the eatery was once the place to go for breakfast and lunch in East Freo, and new owner/chef Michael Higgs has re-established the eatery’s credentials with plenty of fresh paint, funky furnishings, and good food.
The business is a family affair and son Jake was our helpful waiter.
“His girlfriend dries dishes on Sunday, and a niece, who lives up the road, works here,” says dad Michael.
From a cabinet full of tempting delights I ordered the tomato, parmesan risotto cake ($12.50 with an apple broccoli and cabbage salad), while Dave went for the tuna patty ($7.50) and fat chips ($6).
Both dishes were generous in size and my risotto featured rich tomato and sharp cheese, while Dave’s tuna was spicy and delicious.
The chunky chips were piping hot and had a nice crunch on the outside, and were soft and fluffy on the inside, but the salad could have done with a bit more oomph.
All the food is made in-house, including the cakes, and after some agonising I decided on the lemon and greek yoghurt cake, while Dave had the chocolate fudge cake ($5.50).
Served warm, the fudge cake was rich and deliciously chewy, while the lemon cake was soft and fluffy, with the perfect pitch of citrus.
It came with a serve of greek yoghurt which really brought out the flavours of the cake, while Dave’s came with a serve of cream to balance the rich chocolate.
Welcome back Hubble’s Yard.
