Consuming Passions

Spectacular seaside dining on South Beach

Food. The sourcing of produce, the careful preparation following time-honoured traditions, the creation of new dishes and flavours and most of all the joy of sharing food with others is a consuming passion for Omar Abou El Azm and Mario Chiametti. With culinary pedigrees that would impress any Masterchef, Omar and Mario have been honing their craft since they were young lads.

Omar began his journey in his family’s ristorante in northern Italy, then went on to work as a Chef de Rang and restaurant manager in fine establishments across Europe, including a stint at Michelin-starred Chabicou Hotel in France. Omar migrated to Australia in 2007 and worked at several of Perth’s best restaurants – as a Sommelier at Galileo in Shenton Park, and at West Perth’s Perugino, where he was customer service manager for five years.

Mario trained as a Commis de Cuisine in Italy, studying at a professional culinary and hospitality school in San Pellegrino Terme, Bergamo, which is considered the country’s finest. Mario has worked in many renowned hotels across the globe, both as a Chef and Manager. Some of his career highlights include a 3 year tenure at 5-star Parisian hotel Royal Monceau, where he was Head Chef at Il Carpaccio – recognised as the finest Italian restaurant in France.

Mario also spent considerable time in Japan, as a consultant to department store giant Daimaru, where he was tasked with creating a fine dining Italian eatery. Ristorante Paracucchi in Osaka became one of the leading Italian restaurants in all of Japan. Mario reached our sunny shores in 1999 and launched the highly successful Millioncino restaurant, which he ran for over 12 years. Mario has continued to build on his knowledge, completing an Advanced Diploma in Hospitality at Challenger Tafe.

Omar and Mario met while working together at the West Australian Club, and soon discovered a shared vision. They often spoke about opening their own place and a year later, the stars aligned and Bistro 21 was born. Nestled just a few steps from the shore at South Beach, the venue takes in spectacular views of the pristine coast. Bistro 21 is a welcoming, family friendly restaurant, with warm and genuine service.

A recent addition is the fabulous covered alfresco area, which allows patrons to dine outside in comfort all year round. It’s the perfect spot to relax with your pooch after a run on the nearby dog beach. There’s plenty of shade and water bowls are provided.

Omar and Mario know how to source the best quality local produce – which is the key to any great dish, and they also know how best to prepare it to let the true flavours shine through with the magical support of chef Samil the master in the kitchen. A visit just to try the superb coffee and amazing house made pastries is a must.

Open for breakfast and lunch 7 days, Bistro 21 is also hosting tapas Sundowners from 5-7pm on Fridays and Saturdays during the summer months. The venue can easily accommodate small or large groups for special events such birthdays, corporate functions, and end of year Christmas parties.
