Historic beauty

GOLD fever had people and money flooding into WA in the late 1800s.

The state was full of people eager to strike it rich, and this terraced home in East Fremantle is a splendid example of the housing boom during that era.

Situated on Glyde Street, this two-storey semi-detached overlooks the street and has nice vistas of the river and port.

Baltic pine floors are probably the closest the original owners got to gold, but they continue to glow with a rich-yellow intensity in the original upstairs and downstairs sections.

Delightful garden

Two of the four bedrooms are on the ground floor, and one has a lovely ceiling rose and fireplace.

Pine stairs, with blue and yellow patterned tiles, lead to the second level, where there is a delightful garden, courtesy of the house being built on a steep block.

Old and new merge in perfect harmony in the spacious open plan, and the formal lounge is a dignified and relaxing space with french doors and a balcony verandah.

The owner is reportedly torn between having high tea here or in the garden.

It’s easy to see why, as each location is stunning.

The balcony looks out across leafy East Freo streets with partial views of the river and port, while the floor-to-ceiling windows in the open-plan means you can enjoy looking at the gorgeous garden and alfresco.

High limestone walls and plenty of greenery create a protected oasis, further enhanced by a deep pool at the rear of the garden.

Vibrant

The marble splash-back and benchtops add a decadent feel to the kitchen, which includes a large island bench and lots of timber cupboards and drawers.

One of the bedrooms and the two bathrooms are on this level, and up above there is a converted loft with a bedroom and sitting room.

With its soaring cathedral ceiling the loft area would make a great teenage pad, but one wonders if Gen Z would look up from their screen to enjoy the ocean view.

The vibrant George Street strip and the Swan River are a short walk away and Port Beach is a mere five minutes by car.
