COLES is pulling out of the Phoenix shopping centre next month, the Herald understands.
Coles staff were apparently told about the closure last Monday.
Shopping centre management wouldn’t confirm the news, only saying they’d be issuing a press release after the Herald’s deadline.
An Aldi opened in the Phoenix shopping centre precinct last year, eating into Coles’ profit margin.
The centre’s had a rough time in the last two years: Planned upgrades have been delayed and there’s been empty shopfronts as traders struggled to compete with the draw of Gateway shopping centre in Success.
A Herald reader said they’d have to find a Coles at another shopping centre as they weren’t a Woolies fan and reckon there might be a fair few older folk who are brand loyal too.
