BATHERS Beach in Fremantle will go all Brazilian this weekend (January 19-20).
It’s not a bikini waxing event, but Football West will be hosting a beach soccer tournament there.
Brazil has one of the best soccer teams in the world and many of its player honed their skills playing “The Beautiful Game” on the sand when they were kids.
Beach soccer is also popular with retired pros who play
in masters tournaments around the world.
Football West’s Alex Novatsis said beach football was renowned for its outrageous skills and spectacular shots and saves.
“It’s fun and very social and, like futsal and Walking Football, is another format of the sport for people to enjoy along with the traditional 11-a-side,” he said.
“We chose Fremantle because a few years ago we held a joint beach football and cricket event at Bathers Beach which was a big success.”
The Bathers Beach tournament will feature around 160 players in 20 teams across three competitions.
The women’s and mixed teams will be playing from noon-6pm on Saturday followed by the men’s competition on Sunday.
The first Beach Soccer World Championship took place in 1995 in Rio de Janeiro and Brazil have been world champions a record 14 times. The next world cup is in Paraguay in November.
Fremantle mayor Brad Pettitt said Bathers Beach was a stunning location for the tournament.
