Alfresco stoush

A POPULAR South Fremantle cafe has been left with a headache after being pinged for building an alfresco area without council approval.

Calogero’s on South Terrace built the outdoor eating area over a couple of its parking bays, and the council’s planning committee last week refused to give it retrospective approval. The council’s planners say it’s created a parking shortfall in a part of the city already struggling to cope with its increasingly popularity.

The cafe will get another opportunity, with the item automatically referred to full council after a close vote saw the application knocked back three votes to four by the committee.

The unauthorised development is the subject of a council investigation.

The Chook contacted Calogero’s, but got a feisty earful from one of the owners who declined to comment on the record.

  1. One wonders how the same family has converted the two garages next door into leased shop fronts, an icecream shop and the other selling beauty products. The three story units were given planning approval with the apropriate off street parking/garages required. Was planning permission later given to convert the garages into shopfronts? If so it seems strange that the units now have no offstreet parking, so further reducing the parking space around their landholdings, including Port Roaster, Carlogeros and the two unit complexes they own.
