FLASHING yellow lights, clearer markings and and better lighting will help pedestrians cross Canning Highway in the heart of East Fremantle.
Just months after a pedestrian was hit by a car at the lights at the Preston Point Road intersection and was hospitalised, Main Roads has agreed to a raft of improvements.
East Fremantle CEO Gary Tuffin told the Herald motorists turning onto Preston Point Road would now have to wait for lights rather than giving way, while some other lights might be rearranged.
East Fremantle mayor Jim O’Neill said Bicton MLA Lisa O’Malley had lobbied hard for the council. “This intersection, one of the busiest in our town, has been of concern for some time, and we are greatly relieved that the work is about to commence and improvements will be made,” Mr O’Neill said.
Ms O’Malley said she’d doorknocked in the area and knew how often the intersection was used by families and older residents. The upgrade should be finished late July.
