Balloon ban comes  into effect

FREMANTLE council’s balloon ban is now in effect, meaning the release of gas-filled balloons is prohibited on all local government property.

Fremantle endorsed the initiative on Wednesday, June 26 after a consultation period which drew broad support from locals.

The ban follows the council’s boycott of all balloons during it own events.

Anyone releasing a balloon from a council park now risks copping a $125 fine.

While the ban prohibits the release of gas-filled balloons into the atmosphere, it does not prohibit balloons being used as decorations.

Fremantle is the second local government in Perth to adopt the ban – Cottesloe being the first in 2017.
