It was literally love at first sight for optometrists Sam and Carla Schneider.

The husband-and-wife team behind Monocle Optometry in North Fremantle fi rst met in 2013 when Sam was doing an internship in Brisbane as part of his optometry degree.

After returning to his homeland of Canada, they reconnected when Carla was on exchange there and she persuaded him to leave everything behind and start a new life with her down under.

The couple opened Monocle Optometry in 2020 and it’s gone down a storm with North Freo locals who appreciate the premium service and high level of expertise.

“We really take our time – spending up to an hour on every consultation and performing an extremely thorough eye test,” Sam says.

“As an independent practice we pride ourselves on top customer service and going the extra mile for clients.”

You’ll be in safe hands at Monocle Optometry: Sam and Carla have more than 20 years’ experience practising optometry between them and they are members of Optometry Australia, The Australian College of Optometry and The Cornea and Contact Lens Society of Australia.

Monocle Optometry have some of the most advancement equipment in Australia, including one of only a few machines in WA that precisely measures how light scatters across the eye.

The data gathered is used to make bespoke lenses that have the sharpest and clearest image possible.

They also have a state-of-the-art machine that detects the earliest signs of eye disease like glaucoma.

“We pushed the boat out with this piece of equipment and it’s something you would normally only fi nd at a specialist ophthalmologist clinic,” Sam says.

“It means we can detect the very earliest signs of eye disease.”

Situated on Queen Victoria Street, Monocle Optometry offer a wide range of services with everything from your routine eye test to contact lens fi tting, cataract assessment, myopia control, safety eyewear and macular degeneration assessment.

They only use premium German lenses from Rodenstock, who hold about 500 patents and have won more than 50 industry awards, and stock a wide range of designer frames including Tavat, L.G.R. and Fendi.

Monocle Optometry also do children’s eye examinations and Carla has a keen interest in paediatric optometry with an advanced certifi cate in children’s vision.

Sam says it’s important to go for a yearly eye check, even if you’re young with no symptoms.

there is an underlying eye condition that could quickly get worse if not promptly treated,” he says.

“With people spending more and more time on their phone and computer, digital eye strain is another common issue with individuals.”

The Chook had to ask – living and working together, do the couple still see eye-to-eye all the time?

“We’re not always working together on the same day the practice,” laughs Sam.

“But it’s crystal clear we were meant to be together!”
