A Splice of reality

FREMANTLE’S beloved Victoria Hall became “a moving set” for a whimsical dance production of Splice by experimental company i2.

Splice’s producer Samantha Hortin the production, set to choreography by Xin Hui Ong and done in collaboration with the Fremantle Theatre Company was “a huge success”.

For the deep thinkers, Splice brought audiences on an outlandish journey with a musical twist.

• Splice was a hit at Victoria Hall.

It delved into the meaning of life and how the choices we make become linked together and further extend the fabric of the universe.

Ms Hortin said the abstract content helped connect the performers and audience while bonding over art through a shared interactive experience.

Audiences were immersed into the performance through looped, soulful live music combined with contemporary dance on a unique kinetic set design.

Audiences were given a reflection into how easy it is to create reality through individual choices through the clever workings of a movable set that split into a variety of dimensions.

Xin Ong is the powerhouse behind i²’s Splice; a mesmerising performance of dance-theatre “helping people navigate their life choices”.

A subtle change from dance to discussion than gave the audiences the chance to delve into the hidden tapestries of others’ lives as on-stage speakers share their own personal journeys from different walks of life.

Running for three nights, Splice presented new topics each performance through a variety of improvised elements to prove how life can change overnight.

When the performances were over, the audience and performers had a chance to speak with one other and learn about the various backgrounds of one other.

There were also panel discussions at the end of each show, with guest speakers including FTC general managers Pippa Davis.

Discussions included topics of being an independent artist in WA to the significance of relationships.

Ms Hortin hopes to see Splice back on stage soon so it has a chance to develop even further.
