GREYHOUND Adoptions WA is holding its annual walk tomorrow (Sunday September 28) at Piney Lakes, a year after almost topping the global mark for the most dogs in one spot.
Organiser (and the appropriately named) Liz Barker told the Herald only Yorkshire could pull together more greyhounds than Perth in the 2023 Great Global Greyhound Walk.
Ms Barker said the event was aimed at “bringing breed awareness and letting people know what awesome pets they are”.
About 90 per cent of the 200 – 300 greyhounds Greyhound Adoptions WA take in each year are ex-racers, while there are a few from families who can no longer look after them because of travel and the sort, and a few from council pounds.
Ms Barker said GAWA was a “no-kill” rescue, except in extreme health circumstances. Even pretty crook dogs get to live out the last of their lives with some dignity; known as “forever fosters” they are housed with a volunteer who knows their circumstances and ensures they get loads of love.
“All the dogs are in volunteer homes, which is good, because they come from kennels and have to get used to family life,” Ms Barker said.
Registrations for tomorrow’s walk start at 8am with the trot around the lake heading off 9am.
Ms Barker said it’ll take just 15 minutes or so to get around the lake – give or take a sniff or two.
“It’s not very long; they don’t have a lot of stamina – they’re built for speed,” she said.
There’ll also be stalls with pet treats, accessories and merch from GAWA, a coffee van and an affordable sausage sizzle.
