THERE’S been yet another hiccup in getting toilets and change rooms at South Beach.

A concrete slab laid before Christmas will have to be replaced, with councillor Andrew Sullivan saying he understands it was “set at the wrong level”.

The news prompted the usual finger-pointing in comments below the post, with the City of Fremantle coming under fire over the years-long saga to replace the old dunnies.

“Over the coming weeks, beachgoers may notice increased activity at the South Beach change rooms construction site as works restart following the Christmas break,” the post read.

“As with all major projects, issues can arise that require attention and rectification.

“In this case, the building contractor will be working to fix a problem with the concrete slab. This will involve removing and replacing the original material.”

Although the construction timeline has to be adjusted, the council says completion should still be in the first half of this year, while the slab muck-up won’t blow out the cost.

There was still a lot of anger in the posts over the council’s handling of the project, particularly demolishing the old building in 2023 before a tender had been appointed to build the new one.

That meant going a summer without any toilets when the council rejected two tender submissions over the cost and then had to revisit the design before appointing a builder in April last year.

Some lamented the loss of the old loos, despite years of complaints about their poor condition. “Just karma, for demolishing the old class design change rooms,” Franc J Koning suggested about the latest hurdle.
