LABOR maintained its dominance in Chookland electorates Jandakot, Cockburn, Bateman, and Bicton, despite notable swings toward the Liberal Party.

Jandakot: Following a seat redistribution, incumbent Labor MLA Yaz Mubarakai contested the new seat of Oakford, leaving Jandakot open. Labor’s Stephen Pratt secured the seat with a reduced majority after switching from the Upper House.

Cockburn: Labor’s David Scaife successfully defended his seat, obtaining 53.7 per cent of the primary vote—a drop of 16.2 per cent from the previous election. Liberal candidate Brunetta Di Russo, garnered 24.4 per cent of the vote, reflecting a 6.8 per cent increase. The Greens also saw an uptick, receiving 11.4 per cent of the vote, up by 5.2 per cent.

Bateman: Historically a Liberal stronghold, Bateman remained under Labor control with Kim Giddens holding ground against an expected Liberal push in the area. It was a key seat if Libby Mettam’s team was to make significant inroads into Labor’s dominance, and while Ms Giddens lost about 4 per cent of her margin, she’s comfortably home with 52.5 per cent of the vote against Liberal hopeful Nitin Vashisth’s 47.5.

Bicton: Lisa O’Malley retained Bicton with a 19 point margin.
