THE City of Perth has suspended e-scooter hire services following the death of a pedestrian.
Perth man Thanh Phan died on Tuesday after being hit by an e-scooter on the corner of Murray and King Streets on Saturday evening and striking his head on the pavement. Mr Phan was taken to Royal Perth Hospital and underwent surgery for swelling on the brain, but was unable to be revived.
His family called for a review of the governance and safety regulations for e-scooter hire to prevent other families experiencing the same trauma.

“On Saturday night, Thanh Phan – a beloved husband, father of two, brother and dear friend – was struck by an electric scooter and critically injured,” the family said in a statement released by police.
“Yesterday evening, we received the heartbreaking news that Thanh passed away as a result of his injuries.”
The rider of the scooter, 24-year-old English tourist Alicia Kemp has been charged with one count of dangerous driving occasioning death – under the influence of alcohol and one count of dangerous driving occasioning bodily harm.
As a result of concerns being raised about the safety of e-scooters, which are allowed on footpaths in Perth, deputy lord mayor Bruce Reynolds announced the suspension of e-scooter hires effective from midday on Thursday.
“A tragic event occurred at the weekend and our thoughts are with the deceased man’s family at this very sad time,” Cr Reynolds said.
The City didn’t say how long the suspension would last, or respond to the Voice’s question on whether there would be a review of the incident and the hire services.
But a spokesperson for e-scooter provider Neuron said the company respected the decision to suspend the service while the investigation into the incident continued.
“We are working closely with the council and WA Police, and our thoughts remain with the deceased’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
“We understand this temporary pause will affect many people who rely on the service to get around the city, and we appreciate their patience.
“We look forward to resuming safe operations as soon as we are able, in close coordination with the City.”
