ASPIRING authors can sharpen their pens this August, as the Society of Women Writers WA hosts a new season of Wednesday writing classes at Perth’s Citiplace Community Centre.
The program kicks off on August 6 with Writing Short Fiction, led by Perth-based writer Kathleen Knight.
Knight, a seasoned freelance writer, has been guiding writers through the nuances of short stories and poetry for over a decade.
On August 13, award-winning author and publisher Helen Iles presents Immersive Writing, focusing on drawing readers deep into the narrative.
Iles, known for her crime fiction and disaster novels, has been recognised both locally and internationally for her contributions to literature.
The month concludes with a two-part “Crime Writing” course on August 20 and 27, also led by Iles.
Suspenseful
Participants will delve into crafting suspenseful stories, developing memorable characters, and constructing compelling plots.
According to recent industry reports, crime and thriller novels remain the most borrowed genres in Australian libraries, while a 2024 Nielsen BookScan survey showed crime fiction sales in Australia grew by nearly 12 per cent over the previous year.
Meanwhile, immersive writing techniques—used to create deeply engaging narratives—have been at the centre of literary attention thanks to bestselling authors like Jane Harper and Trent Dalton, who use vivid settings and interior character focus to keep readers hooked.
With readers increasingly expecting cinematic-style depth in everything from fiction to memoir, mastering immersive storytelling is becoming essential for emerging writers.
Each session runs from 9.30 am to 12 noon and costs $20 for SWWWA members and $25 for non-members. Bookings are essential due to limited seating.
