LIGHTING has now been added to the HMAS Perth (I) memorial, creating a striking beacon on Riverside Road in East Fremantle. The memorial was opened on March 1, marking the 83rd anniversary of the Perth’s sinking at the Battle of Sunda Strait in 1942.

Memorial Foundation publicist David Nicolson is hoping the spotlights (and a bit of Chook coverage) will bring attention to the memorial, as he doesn’t believe many people are aware of its completion.

“This is the second naval memorial designed by husband and wife team, Joan and Charlie Smith who were also responsible for the HMAS Sydney memorial in Geraldton.
