WASTE giant Remondis says its aware of sensitive cockatoo habitat at its new Jandakot site, but its recycling plans will deliver “massive environmental benefits”.
Environmental group Save the Cockatoos has raised concerns about the dwindling stands of banksia woodlands in the metropolitan area, saying endangered black cockatoos could go extinct locally because of a dearth of feeding and roosting sites (“Cocky lovers rubbish development,” Herald, August 2, 2025).
The Remondis site on Prinsep Road is next to another block with a stand of banksia that’s slated to be mostly cleared to make way for Perth’s proposed wave park.
Remondis Australia says the environment will be the winner from its plans at the site.
“Ultimately we’re looking at taking recycling operations to another level, thereby diverting waste from landfill and giving recyclables a second life,” it said via a media statement.
“That said, we’re certainly aware of the woodlands issue.
“This is a matter that will be looked at closely as we consult with stakeholders and government decision-makers.”
