Freo anchors tourism crown

FREO has been awarded Australia’s Top Tourism Town for 2025, beating out Devenport in Tasmania and NSW’s Kiama for the prestigious destination award.

At a ceremony at Parliament House in Canberra on Wednesday, mayor Hannah Fitzhardinge picked up the Gold Award on behalf of the City as judged by the Australian Tourism Industry Council.

Ms Fitzhardinge says the award was proof of Freo’s “authentic” attraction and charm, which she says brings “nearly a million day-trippers” to the Port City annually.

“Visitors love to connect with genuine experiences, and we love sharing our heritage, culture, and coastline with them,” Ms Fitzhardinge said.

“This award is recognition for the many passionate people, guides, volunteers, operators, artists, and business owners who bring Fremantle to life.

“This is a celebration of the diversity of towns and communities that make up Australia’s tourism story.”

Despite Freo not polling in the top 6 destinations in 2024, the council’s City business director Matt Hammond put the win down to “the success of the THIS IS FREMANTLE campaign” which has been used since the Covid-19 pandemic.

“This fresh wave of interest is a result of the incredible foundation of tourism development, marketing, events, activation, and advocacy that the City has build over the last three or four years,” Mr Hammond said.

“With strategic direction from the City’s Destination Marketing Working Group and support from local businesses, investors, and the friendly Visitor Centre team, Fremantle has emerged from the Covid years in a strong position, generating renewed curiosity from local and domestic visitors, as well as being WA’s most popular cruising destination.”

Fremantle Chamber of Commerce CEO Chrissie Maus, who was announced as chair of Destination Perth this week, says she “could not be prouder of our Port City” and credited the “passionate” local businesses who “bring this place to life every single day”.

“This award is because of them,” Ms Maus said.

“Fremantle is not just a destination, it’s an experience where heritage streets meet bold creativity and every laneway hums with stories, flavours, and possibility.

“This recognition cements Fremantle’s place as the beating heart of WA’s tourism story and a sparkling must-visit for travellers from near and far.”
