BEACONSFIELD resident Samantha de Souza has taken out the People and Portraits category at this year’s Subiaco Photographic Awards with her striking work Red.

“It’s a surprise and I’m just happy to be a part of it,” de Souza said. 

“It was for a job that didn’t go ahead, and I’ve been sitting on them for a few years and thought I’d send them in because I really love them.”

De Souza says her background as a textile artist has an influence on her photography and she was experimenting with the silky red fabric captured in Red.

“I do shoot fabrics a lot and I haven’t been printing or working with textiles recently, but I am hoping to go back and merge the two together. 

“I work a lot with silks and satins.”

Subiaco mayor David McMullen said the record 1250 entries were “a testament to the photographic talent we have across our community”.

The exhibition runs at Subiaco Library until September 7.
