SPARE PARTS’ award-winning artistic director Philip Mitchell has announced his retirement after 26 years in the job.
Mr Mitchell, who directed award-winning Spare Parts productions such as The Arrival, Beanstalk, and The One Who Planted Trees, will be stepping down at the beginning of 2027 following a “national search” for his replacement.
Mr Mitchell says he “could not have imagined” his “extraordinary journey” as artistic director after taking the helm in 2001.

Imagination
“It has been the privilege of my working life to lead a company that believes so fiercely in the power of imagination, to see puppetry not as a niche curiosity, but as a sophisticated, moving, and deeply human form of theatre,” Mr Mitchell said.
“I am immensely proud of the artists, makers, technicians, and staff who have poured their hearts into our work, and grateful to the audiences who have grown up with us, and who now send their children, grandchildren, and even great grandchildren to us.
“While it is the right time for me to hand the reins to a new artistic leader, my belief in the magic of puppetry and Spare Parts remains as strong as ever.”
Mr Mitchell’s retirement comes in a time of immense change for Spare Parts, after the Theatre announced its performance venue will be moving to a “purpose-built” location at the Claremont Showgrounds.
Spare Parts chair David Mofflin says Mr Mitchell’s “artistically adventurous” legacy has left the iconic theatre “ready for its next chapter” as it splits its domain between Fremantle and Claremont.
“Philip has been a transformative leader for Spare Parts Puppet Theatre,” Mr Mofflin said.
“Over nearly a quarter of a century he has nurtured generations of artists, championed the role of creative arts workers in our state, and expanded the company’s reach across Australia and overseas.”
